Multiple District Champions, 6 Teams Advance to States to Round Out Winter Season
It’s been a busy couple weeks for the winter sports teams, who all advanced to the PIAA state tournament (as a team or individually). Arguably the most exciting was girls basketball, who 2-peated in the district championship by beating Middletown in a 42-28 win at the Giant Center.
The win, which is their third appearance and second win in the past three years, proved their dominance in 5A basketball, even with the absence of key player Lydia Powers (lower body injury). As a result of their win, they will host the states first round against Bethel Park on Saturday at 5pm.
While not as successful, boys basketball also advanced to the state tournament, even after a heart-breaking 64-60 loss to rival West York in the district third place game. Capturing fourth place, the boys don’t get a home game, but instead have to travel to Roxborough tonight, where the tip-off is set for 7:30pm.
Even with the lack of a pool, the swim team proved their continued dominance, earning multiple top three finishes. Additionally, Senior Chloe Moore set the school record during her win in the girls 100m backstroke at 58.29 seconds.
Basketball and swimming weren’t the only teams who made it to States, though. Gehret Gentzyel placed 5th in the regional round of the boys wrestling tournament, which advances him to States, and Angela Imhora won her weight place class, putting her into States. Alysiana Ierely will also be headed to the State wrestling tournament after her 4th place finish at Regionals.
Winter sports never disappoint when it comes to long playoff runs, and this year is no different. If you want to learn more about specific game details or purchase tickets, visit the athletics website at ystrojans.org.
